Davis PARENTSDO ALERTS

May 2012: Read this before Prom, Grad Night and other end of year celebrations:

If you are like many Davis parents and think that it is ok for kids to smoke pot, you might want to read a recent report out by The Partnership at Drugfree.org, being released today.
http://www.drugfree.org/newsroom/pats-2011

According to the report, marijuana use by teens is on the rise, with nearly 1 in 10 lighting up at least 20 or more times a month. The percentage of teens smoking pot 20 or more times a month. That rate went from 5 percent in 2008 to 9 percent last year, or about 1.5 million teens.

Parents”need to be be stressing the message that this behavior is unhealthy”, according to Partnership at Drugfree.org, President Steve Pasier. “The mindset among parents is that it’s just a little weed or a few pills – no biggie.” But, the Partnership study suggests a link between teens who smoke pot more regularly and the use of other drugs. Teens who smoked 20 times or more a month were almost twice as likely as kids who smoked pot less frequently to use ecstasy, cocaine or crack. Many students and teachers say pot is everywhere, and they can obtain it easily. Make sure you talk to your child about your expectations before they head out for end of the year activities. The partnership study suggests a link between teens who smoke pot more regularly and the use of other drugs. Ask students or teachers you know, trust and respect about the use of marijuana by Davis kids. It might surprise you. Then, talk to your teens about your expectations before they head out for end of year celebrations.

April 2012: A heads up to parents and caregivers who care about reducing, through increased parent involvement, the use of substances by teens.

1) Be aware of the incense Head Trip, which we were told is/was sold at Illusions in Davis. Head Trip is a synthetic cannibis that can be bought legally in CA; it is also known as K2 or Spice. The incense products carry a label “Not for Human Consumption” but kids disregard the warning and purchase the products to smoke them. Head Trip can cause seizures and other serious side effects.

2) You can help keep upcoming dances substance- free by talking to your teen ahead of time and making sure they arrive at the event sober. This takes some of the burden off school officials and volunteers who are trying to keep everyone safe.

April 20th, AKA “420″ is known by teens and young adults as the biggest marijuana smoking day of the year and it is approaching.  Regardless of your child’s or client’s history of use they know about this day and many experience pressure to use on this day.  This is why we are emailing this newsletter.  We believe this to be a time to offer support to young people before the day arrives.  Talk to them about their understanding of the day,
experience of the day in the past, and anticipated pressures with it coming soon. There are so many myths about this day that it creates a great discussion.  Offer ways to help them negotiate their way through it and if so, keep them home from school that friday and spend the day doing fun alternatives as a family… If you are a clinician then this can be
something you help familes to work on.

In addition, having drug testing supplies around the house helps the young person have a refusal skill when peer pressure occurs. It will occur. When they say, “my parents have a drug test and they will use it,” then the peer pressure stops. The negative friends back away. We hope you find this newsletter informative in a way that opens up dialague and helps the young person and their family prepare. Below are great resources to help you with this issue:

REPORT RELEASED ON TEEN DRUG USE

For the first time, teens are more likely to use marijuana over nicotine and alcohol. This study has been conducted since 1975 and is really the only study that I use as a reliable benchmark. Typically it matches our local trends. Teens decreased their use of some drugs and increased their use of others. See PDF file on Boosters website here:

http://www.davinciboosters.net/links/Teen%20Drug%20Trends%20of%202010.pdf/document.pdf

Feel free to pass this on to any parents or professionals whom you think might benefit from the information.
